One of the best things you can do for your health is to cut out tobacco and quit smoking. Yes, it’s hard, but it’s not impossible. Those who quit smoking before the age of 40 cut their risk of dying from smoking-related disease by about 90%.
The American Cancer Society hosts the Great American Smokeout Day every year (on the third Thursday during the month of November) and encourages smokers to take action and make a plan to quit. By doing so, smokers will be taking an important step toward a healthier life that includes a reduced risk of cancer.
Why Quit Smoking? Smoking causes serious health problems. It can lead to cancer, heart disease, stroke and lung disease. According to the American Cancer Society, the Surgeon General’s reports have shown that smoking impacts nearly every organ of the body.
More than 480,000* people in the U.S. die each year because of smoking. On the financial side, smoking costs $193 billion each year in health care costs and lost productivity.
No one said it would be easy and in fact, people often try to quit several times before they quit for good. Just remember, quitting will lead to better health for you and for those around you.
When you quit smoking, there are major benefits for you, but if that’s not enough motivation, then think about your friends and family. Second-hand smoke can cause asthma and other health problems in people around you, especially children. If you're pregnant, not smoking will give your baby more oxygen and you'll be less likely to have problems with your pregnancy.
