Emotional Health: The Forgiveness Letter

Emotional Health: The Forgiveness Letter

“As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn't leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I'd still be in prison.” ¯ Nelson Mandela

Forgiveness is a liberating solution for transforming your anger. It frees you from the trap of anger and revenge and can allow you to finally find joy.

Forgiveness lets you move forward. It doesn't always dissolve the anger but it does give you the freedom of knowing you are so much more.

Writing the Letter
Writing a forgiveness letter provides you an outlet for expressing your feelings. You can write the letter on your own, with the help of a counselor or even with a trusted friend. This letter is for you! You can write it however you like, but the ultimate goal is to share your story and how it has affected you, what you have learned from the experience and how it made you stronger.

Once you sit down to write, outline the steps you need to get it done so that if you get stuck with "writer's block" you have prompts to help you. Here are a few good ones:

  • List the reasons why you want to forgive the person.
  • Share how you have been affected by holding onto anger or resentment.
  • Write how you think you will feel once you are able to let it go.

Have you ever done anything like a forgiveness letter? We would love to hear how it worked or didn't work for you. Tell us your story!
