BCBSOK Sponsors Kids Training Program for YMCA Tulsa

We’re getting moving with the kids at the YMCA! On Nov. 10, 2016, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma (BCBSOK) concluded its sixth-consecutive collaboration with YMCA of Greater Tulsa for the annual Kids Training Program. BCBSOK is the presenting sponsor of the 2016 Williams Route 66 Marathon and has partnered with the YMCA to provide funding for 300 local children to run in the Route 66 5K race on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016.

YMCA of Greater Tulsa’s Kids Training Program is a six-week program hosted at different YMCA locations throughout the city. The running program is designed to prepare local kids for the 5K race during the marathon weekend. As a health care company, BCBSOK is dedicated to teaching kids the importance of a healthy lifestyle at a young age. The partnership with the YMCA makes health and wellness a priority for local kids.

BCBSOK employees partnered with the Eugene Field Elementary School in West Tulsa for the first time this year. BCBSOK employee volunteers were paired with groups of second and third grade children for three training sessions in October and November. The school’s track was filled with positivity and excitement as the students were cheered on and rewarded with stickers after completing run and walk intervals. One BCBSOK volunteer even showed the children her personal medals from previous Route 66 races to encourage them to register for the 5K.

The program culminated on Nov. 10 with a special visit from BCBSOK’s mascot, Blaze the Braggin’ Blue Dragon. Blaze was the highlight of the training session, inspiring the kids to complete all 22 laps around the track, totaling a 5K. The students left on a high note and expressed their excitement for race day.

For many of the students, this will be their first time participating in a long distance run. BCBSOK is excited for the kids to experience the sense of achievement in completing their first race. The ultimate reward will be seeing their smiles as they cross the finish line!
