BRENT: We are gathered here, celebrating the launch of our Spokies bike-shares 8th station. Thanks to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma, we’ve been able to install the station, and not only that, we’ve been able to re-boot the whole bike share system. We’ve been able to refurbish the bikes. They were originally gray, with rust, and we’ve been able to strip that down, powder-coat them blue, clean and refurbish a lot of the components. On top of that, we have a whole-new rebrand of the system to kind of spice it up and get it a little more contemporary. We have now 8 stations, very happy about that, and we highlight areas that are, one: high density, two: next to cultural facilities or places that have a lot of recreation, and as well as high-density residential areas. We tie it to both cultural and professional business areas so that it is easy for people to get around, and it’s relatively close to the destinations they want to go to.
LAUREN: Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma is dedicated to improving the health and wellness of Oklahomans, and Spokies offers a healthy way to get around downtown Oklahoma City. So, the partnership is really beneficial because we can help the program be more viable, which in turn, helps Oklahomans be able to use great programs like Spokies and can help improve their health and wellness.
J.T.: A Spokies bike station is great for the community because it really makes it easy for people to live an active lifestyle…a healthy lifestyle. Whereas, they don’t have to think about how to get a bicycle to where they’re at, they can just grab one, ride it to their next destination, drop it off, it’s convenient, it’s safe, and it’s just a great way to get around the city.
LAUREN:This is the second year that we are sponsoring the program. It’s really important for people to get out-and-about throughout the day. If you are like me, you are sitting at a desk most of the day, and have to get creative on how to get in your recommended 30 to 60 minutes of activity, and Spokies offers a great opportunity for people to do that. If you have to run to a business meeting, you can hop on a bike. Or, if you want to go somewhere for lunch downtown, you can just hop on a bike and see where it takes you!
