Can You Get Health Insurance Now?

You’ve probably heard a lot about the new health care law, called the Affordable Care Act. You may have also heard that, in most cases, you can only sign up for a health insurance plan during the open enrollment period. Open enrollment is over for this year, but you may still be able to get health insurance now -- if you’ve had a major change in your life recently, like losing a job or having a baby. The next open enrollment begins November 1, but there are other times you can sign up: these and other “qualifying life events” allow you to qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

What Is a Qualifying Life Event for Special Enrollment Period?

  • Having a baby or adopting a child
  • Losing a job
  • Getting married
  • Moving to a new area that changes access to your current HMO network
  • Changing of your income or household status
  • Proving that your health insurance company violated its contract with you
  • Becoming a U.S. citizen
  • Losing coverage on a family member's policy because you turned 26, legally separated from or divorced your spouse, or the policy holder has passed away
  • If you are a member of an American Indian and Alaska Native tribe

If you missed the open enrollment period and don’t qualify for the Special Enrollment Period, you can work directly with us to buy a short-term insurance plan to cover you through the end of the year.

You can call us at 1-866-793-1515 or visit your local agent if you want to learn more about qualifying life events.
