Every year close to this time, we are saturated with words and phrases that go hand-in-hand with the weather and events on our calendars. Greeting cards, boots, scarves, cocoa and health insurance…did I lose you on that last one? Health insurance? Whether you’ve scored a spot on the naughty or nice list this year, “open enrollment” is a phrase heard often this time of year and everyone gets to join in the fun! If you’re not entirely familiar with what open enrollment is or why we’re talking about it, we’ve simplified it down for you. Now that the time has come for us to select and switch health coverage, we’ve made a list of things to keep in mind before looking for coverage, as well as how to choose the right plan for your situation, and what’s next after you’ve selected your plan.

Before You Buy
[]   Set a budget. Check out whether your family is eligible for financial assistance.
[]   Write down your household information.

before you enroll, have information handy

During Your Purchase
[]   Get together a list of the physicians the people in your family see and compare those names to the potential plan’s provider network.
[]   Gather the names of each prescribed medication your family takes on a routine basis, then determine how they are covered on the plans you are considering.
 Identify when you need your new plan to start. Make sure you enroll by December 15 if you need your plan to start on January 1.

After Your Purchase
[]   Pay your first month’s bill, because your plan won’t start until you do. Paying your premium has never been easier!
[]   Get educated on how your new coverage works, including deductibles, out of pocket maximums, and copayments. Once your plan starts, log into Blue Access for Members to find a doctor or hospital in your plan’s network, review your benefits, print a temporary ID card, and more.

While you’re trying new autumn recipes and planning family gatherings, don’t forget to safeguard your family’s health by enrolling in health insurance this open enrollment season. The window is from November 1, 2018 – December 15, 2018, so while you’re prepping for a new year detox routine , get ahead on getting covered!
