Hi there, I’m Dr. Todd Hoffman, Chief Medical Officer at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma, with a message for every adult about blood pressure. While it’s possible to feel when our heart is beating fast, we may not know if we have high blood pressure. High blood pressure usually has no warning signs or symptoms. That’s why it’s so important to have your blood pressure checked at each visit with your health care provider or specialist. Even if your blood pressure has typically been normal, blood pressure can change over time. And if untreated, high blood pressure can cause heart attack, a stroke or even damage to your kidneys. If you’re diagnosed with high blood pressure, visit your health care provider at least twice a year. And make sure medications or other treatments are keeping your blood pressure in check. And while you’re at it, ask your health care provider if you need to be screened for diabetes too. Each of us can make daily decisions that help our blood pressure, such as exercising, eating a healthful diet, losing weight if overweight, and stopping smoking. Having your blood pressure checked may be lifesaving, so take action now by scheduling your next visit. As always, be sure to talk to your health care provider about any questions or concerns you have regarding your health. Thank you and stay well.
